05 Mar I’m disabled. Can I get the Stay NJ benefit?
Photo: pixabay.comQ. I’m disabled and not yet 65 years old. I applied for ANCHOR, the Senior Freeze and Stay NJ. The Senior Freeze allows for disabled applicants, so I thought Stay NJ did, also. The PAS-1 booklet states on the front cover, “Do not use this form unless you are under 65 and collecting disability.” The inside also states if you receive Railroad/Disability, you are qualified. Should I get the benefit?

A. The PAS-1 application handles all three benefits, but the eligibility for each is different. The state tells all potentially eligible applicants — or applicants who are eligible for only one of the benefits — to complete the form.
We double-checked with the Treasury Department.
“People who received federal Social Security disability benefit payments or Railroad Retirement disability benefit payments could be eligible for Senior Freeze or ANCHOR,” a spokeswoman said. “They would not be eligible for Stay NJ.”
People under age 65 receiving disability benefits, if they are eligible for ANCHOR, would not be eligible for the extra $250 that senior citizens get with ANCHOR.
