I got ANCHOR, but was there an error?

Q. Good news: My ANCHOR payment was deposited in my bank account today. Was this a bank error in my favor? My payment was $1800, which is more than I expected.

A. We’re glad your payment came through.

We think we can explain the unexpected amount.

It looks like you’re a senior homeowner, which would give you a $1,500 ANCHOR payment plus an extra $250 for seniors.

But what of the extra $50?

It’s probably an additional property tax credit that some taxpayers are eligible for.

The majority of those who are eligible — people who are 65 and over or disabled and who earn under a certain limit — receive the credit when they file their New Jersey income tax return, Form NJ-1040.

But taxpayers who are not required to file an income tax return are still eligible for the credit. Sometimes, that amount is added to their ANCHOR payment.

So we’re willing to bet that’s how your amount came to $1,800.
