Is it too late to get the $50 property tax credit?

Q. I somehow forgot to apply for the $50 property tax credit on my NJ 1040 return. I just checked my returns going back to 2017 and the only year I actually applied for it was 2018. Is there any way I can still apply?

A. That’s a tough break.

Many people haven’t applied for that break, but even people who don’t file a tax return may be eligible.

In the past, the state has sent the extra $50 to those who don’t file with their ANCHOR benefits.

So our first suggestion is to look at your past ANCHOR benefits to see if the money was included there.

If not, you’d have to file Form NJ-1040-HW, which can be downloaded from the state’s website.

Whether or not they will be accepted late? Give it a try. If you’re denied, you can try to appeal, though the state may not accept “I forgot” as an answer. Instead, those who had a medical emergency, for example, may have a better shot.
