Q. I would like to get my husband’s Social Security number. We are going through divorce and I need his number. How can I get it?
— Asking

A. There are places where you may be able to find his number.

Hopefully, you have access to your financial paperwork as a married couple.

Start with any tax returns you’ve filed together. His Social Security number would be on the old returns.

Check your other financial paperwork, including for investment accounts, health insurance or life insurance, for example.

You didn’t say if you’re looking specifically at Social Security benefits for which you may be eligible.

If you contact Social Security at (800) 772-1213 or visit a local office, you can get help to see whether you’re eligible — you’d have been married for more than 10 years, age 62 or above, and not remarried. Then, you may be eligible to claim one-half of your ex’s monthly benefit as long as your ex is 62 or older.

When you go to an office, bring a non-expired ID, your birth certificate, your marriage certificate and when you have one, a divorce agreement.

If you haven’t met with an attorney yet, you should, and they would be able to talk you through the best way to handle your situation.
