How can I apply for ANCHOR this year?

Q. I failed to file for the ANCHOR rebate last year because I didn’t understand what it was about. Consequently I have not received an application this year. How can I get an application for this year?
— Empty pockets

A. Let’s go over a few items.

For what you called last year’s ANCHOR benefit, it’s actually for the 2019 tax year.

The current benefit being paid out is for the 2020 tax year.

If you haven’t received an application, you can simply apply online, or download an application and mail it in, from the state’s ANCHOR website.

Note that there are different applications for renters and for homeowners.

The deadline to apply is Dec. 29, so you’ve got some time, but the state is already sending out benefits, so there’s no reason to wait.

Also note that if you think you would have qualified for the 2019 benefit but you missed the deadline, you can still apply, but you should expect to be denied. But when you are, you can file an appeal.

The state hasn’t made clear who would win an appeal, but we’ve heard some success stories, so you have nothing to lose. You can also get that application from the state website.
