Will I lose some of my Senior Freeze because of Stay NJ?

Q. Because of the changes for Stay NJ, and the smaller benefits and income levels, I am concerned about my Senior Freeze. I am eligible for a $5,000 maximum under Stay. But I get $6,300 for Senior Freeze and $1,000 for ANCHOR. Will my benefits be cut now?

A. You fall into an interesting category.

Some people who have been receiving Senior Freeze benefits for many years — and who have seen their property tax bill skyrocket over time — get a very chunky check from this tax relief program.

When Stay NJ was made law, officials realized that some homeowners already received more than the maximum benefit under Stay, so they created a loophole specifically for these homeowners.

They said specifically that no one would get a smaller tax benefit under the Stay NJ law. That means if you get a high Senior Freeze benefit that puts you over the max under Stay, you won’t lose it.

Instead, you just won’t get an additional payment beyond ANCHOR and Senior Freeze. You’d get nothing more under the Stay NJ name.
