— Gambler, sometimes
A. Congrats on your win.
Depending on which kind of Social Security benefit you receive, the consequences are different.
If you are talking about regular Social Security benefits, winning some money at a casino will not affect your Social Security benefits, said Bernie Kiely, a certified financial planner and certified public accountant with Kiely Capital Management in Morristown.
“It could increase the portion that is subject to income taxes,” Kiely said.
Social Security Disability benefits are another thing.
Social Security Disability, which is officially known as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), is generally for individuals who don’t earn more than $2,073 from work each month and have less than $2,000 in assets (or $3,000 for couples). The income limit increases for couples and when parents apply for children, he said.
The government also looks at other sources of income besides your job, like disability benefits, unemployment and pensions.
“Winning $4,000 while on Supplemental Security Income will likely suspend your benefits for at least one month because it exceeds the $2,000 ($3,000 for couples) asset limit,” he said. “You must report this income to the Social Security Administration (SSA) by the 10th of the following month to avoid overpayment penalties, as your winning count as unearned income in the month received.”
