16 Sep How does the vet tax deduction factor into Stay NJ?
Photo: pixabay.comQ. I have a question about the veteran deduction. In the past, when filing prior PTR-2 Senior Freeze applications, you would enter your property tax due and paid before the deduction. So if I was billed $9,000 but got a $250 vet deduction, I actually only paid $8,750 but I was instructed to enter the full amount billed of $9,000 on the form. Should the PAS-1 be the same? It is not specific like the older forms. Also, how will the vet deduction be applied to the Stay NJ act? Will the 50% I can get include the veteran deduction along with the ANCHOR and Senior Freeze?

A. Thank you for your service.
All these different property tax relief benefits sure can get confusing.
The instructions for Form PAS-1, Application for Property Tax Relief, which is a single combined application for the Senior Freeze (Property Tax Reimbursement), Affordable New Jersey Communities for Homeowners and Renters (ANCHOR), and the Stay NJ programs, call for entries of property taxes billed, said Neil Becourtney, a certified public accountant and tax director with Smolin, Lupin & Co. in Red Bank.
Using your figures, you would enter $9,000 — the amount before the $250 veterans deduction that you receive, he said.
The Stay NJ benefit is calculated after ANCHOR and Senior Freeze benefits are determined.
The Stay benefit will be 50% of the property taxes, capped at $6,500, minus any payments received through ANCHOR and Senior Freeze, Becourtney said.
“It does not appear that your veterans deduction will result in any reduction of the other property tax relief amounts,” he said.
