Is now too risky a time to start a business?

Q. I am thinking of starting a new business and it was going to be an LLC with just me and my wife. But now with all the tariff talk I’m thinking I should forget this idea for now because it may be too risky. What do you think?

A. This is a volatile time for all things business.

Your concerns are valid.

Political and economic uncertainty, like tariffs, should be a consideration, said Bill Connington of Connington Wealth Management in Paramus.

But whether to delay your LLC depends on what kind of business you’re starting, your financial cushion, and how much flexibility you have to scale up or down, he said.

“Instead of going `all in’ now, you could file the LLC and treat it as a side hustle,” Connington said. “That gives you a legal foundation and flexibility without major risk.”

He said many successful businesses started during uncertain times — because they were nimble, not heavily leveraged, and met real needs.

“If you’ve got a solid business idea and a modest way to start, it could be smart to launch now and build slow,” he said.
