Q. Can you collect unemployment if you are collecting a pension from a union?
— Unsure

A. We hope you haven’t lost your job yet.

But if you have and you’re applying for unemployment benefits, here’s what you should know.

You can collect unemployment benefits while receiving a pension from a union, said Bill Connington of Connington Wealth Management in Paramus.

But, he said, the amount of unemployment you receive may be reduced.

“If your base period employer contributed to your pension, you can expect a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your unemployment benefit for each dollar you receive from the pension,” Connington said. “This is true even if you partially contributed to the pension.”
