Q. When I went to apply for Social Security benefits, I was asked for my husband’s Social Security number. I don’t have it. How can I get it?

A. Your local Social Security office should be able to help you.

You should bring with you a non-expired ID, your birth certificate, your marriage certificate and proof of termination of the marriage, whether through divorce or death, Social Security said. So that means you should bring your husband’s death certificate, and if you’re divorced, proof of the divorce.

You should also bring your bank account information for direct deposit of any benefits, he said.

You can contact Social Security at (800) 772-1213 or find your local office here.
