03 Apr Will my tax bill be higher now that I moved to N.J.?
Photo: pixabay.comQ. I moved to New Jersey last year from New York. My income was all from New York, but now that I moved to New Jersey, I also have to file a New Jersey state tax return. Will my overall tax bill be worse or better now, or what do I need to know?

A. Congrats on your move, and welcome to The Garden State.
It’s impossible to know precisely what your 2025 tax return results will be without having all your tax information.
There are various factors impacting your situation, including whether you resided in New York City, which has an additional tax on top of the New York State income tax, compared to if you levied elsewhere, as on Long Island or in Westchester, where there is no additional tax, said Neil Becourtney, a certified public accountant and tax director with Smolin, Lupin & Co. in Red Bank.
“Moving out of New York City would have a greater impact than moving from a New York suburb,” he said. “One would also need to know whether you continue to be employed in New York – your reference to all your income being from New York suggests employment.”
Based on your limited facts, you were a part-year resident of both New York and New Jersey, which requires you to file part-year resident income tax returns with both states using NY Form IT-203 and Form NJ-1040, Becourtney said.
If you lived in New York City, then you would also need to file Form IT-360.1.
“If you continue to be employed in New York as a New Jersey resident, you will need to calculate a `resident credit’ on your Form NJ-1040 (Schedule COJ) for a portion of your New York tax to avoid paying duplicate tax on your wage income, if indeed you received wages,” he said.
