Q. Your last answer about Health Savings Accounts got my attention. I am on Medicare. My husband is still working and has an HSA through his employer. My Medicare premium is deducted monthly from my Social Security benefit. Curious to know how one would pay for original Medicare via an HSA?
— Still working

A. Good follow-up question.

Health Savings Accounts, or HSAs, are tax-advantaged accounts that allow individuals with high-deductible health plans (HDHPs) to set aside pre-tax money to pay for qualified medical expenses.

The benefits of HSAs include tax-deductible contributions — often through payroll deduction — tax-free interest, and tax-free withdrawals for many medical needs, said Claudia Mott, a certified financial planner with Epona Financial Solutions in Basking Ridge.

It is important to note that any expenses paid through an HSA cannot be taken as deductions on a tax return, she said.

She said whether your Medicare Part B and D can be paid through your husband’s HSA is dependent on his age.

“There is a restriction that requires the HSA owner to be age 65 or older in order for the account to be used for a spouse’s Medicare premiums,” Mott said.

If he meets the age criteria, contact the HSA provider to discuss how best to set up these payments, she said. It may be that they can automatically send payment through their platform, she said.

You will also need to inform Medicare of the change of payment method, she said.
