My ANCHOR benefit was wrong. What should I do?

Q. I have a question regarding my ANCHOR payment. I rent, but I got a direct deposit for $1,000. Obviously that’s wrong. While I could use the money, I want to do the right thing. What should I do?
— Longtime renter

A. As a renter, you should have received a $450 benefit. If you’re a senior, you should have received a $250 bonus.

We know it can be hard to get through on the hotline, which is (888) 238-1233 or (609) 826-4282.

The state asks that anyone who receives a payment in error to return it to New Jersey Division of Taxation, PO BOX 266, Trenton, NJ 08695-0266.

Given that it was a direct deposit, you can write a check — for what you think is the overpayment — and include a note explaining why you think you were overpaid.
