A. Welcome to tax time.
Free File is an IRS service that allows you to, as the name suggests, file for free.
TurboTax and other tax programs may provide free filing for some taxpayers, other filers will pay to use the service.
“TurboTax can be a valuable option if you want more guidance, convenience tools, or access to expert help, but IRS Free File is often sufficient if your tax return is simple and you’re comfortable filing on your own,” said Joseph Sarnecki, a certified financial planner with U.S. Financial Services in Fairfield.
He said TurboTax provides a highly user-friendly experience along with help content and support for complex tax situations such as itemized deductions, investment income, rental properties and self employment. It also offers live expert assistance, full service preparation, automatic W-2/1099 import, prior year import and more, he said.
“In contrast, IRS Free File delivers free federal filing — with no upselling,” he said.
“TurboTax limits its free version to simple 1040 returns and often requires upgrades for common scenarios, so while it adds value through usability and optional expert support, IRS Free File remains one of the best zero cost options if you’re comfortable navigating your return independently,” Sarnecki said.
