A. The Community Solar Energy Program enables utility customers to participate in a solar energy project that is remotely located from their property, according to the state website.
According to the state’s brochure, “community solar projects enable greater access to solar energy.”
“Electric utility customers who have previously been unable to go solar, due to a variety of factors including cost, unsuitable roof, or lack of roof control, can now access this renewable energy,” it said.
“It enables low- & moderate-income households and the environmental justice community greater access to clean energy and savings on their electricity bills. Community solar encourages local clean energy development without compromising the preservation of open space or protected lands in New Jersey,” it said.
To participate, you’d become a “subscriber.”
“Subscribers receive a bill credit on their utility bill for their participation in a community solar project. Subscribers are not directly connected to the solar array. They can be down the road, across town or even all the way across the state,” it said, claiming community solar projects typically offer their subscribers a 15-25% discount on their electricity bills.
Anyone who is an electric utility customer can participate, it said.
