Should we reapply for the Senior Freeze?

Q. My husband and I completed the “one application” for Anchor, Senior Freeze and Stay NJ Benefits when it first became available. When I checked the ANCHOR status, it stated they had received my application. When I checked Senior Freeze status, it stated they did not have an application for this. Should we reapply again for the Senior Freeze?

A. It sounds like something is wrong here.

Senior Freeze payments already started going out, and ANCHOR benefits won’t be paid until mid-September.

Submitting a second application, though, isn’t the way to go. At least not yet.

Your best bet is to call what’s been called the ANCHOR hotline — it should probably be renamed now that Stay NJ is part of the property tax relief program — at (888) 238-1233, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

While the hotline came under great criticism in the past few years, the most recent check we did found 96% of calls were answered in a very short minute or two. Give it a try and let us know what you’re told.
