How do I apply for ANCHOR if a co-owner has died?

Q. Last year, my property taxes were changed from a joint property ownership to me owning the home alone. I completed the booklet, and also sent a copy of my new deed and the death certificate for the former co-owner. But as I’m trying to apply for the 2024 benefit, it seems Taxation doesn’t have a record of this. I can’t get through on the phone. What can I do?

A. We know getting through on the phone can be tough, especially during the busy season — which seems to be now as people await their ANCHOR benefits.

You were not clear what your relationship was to your co-owner.

The state website says: “If you are an executor or surviving spouse/civil union partner, filing on behalf of an eligible homeowner who died on or after October 1, 2024, attach supporting documents with the application (i.e., death certificate). Do not include the deceased spouse’s name on the application.”

Try calling again at (888) 238-1233. The automated phone system will — if the queue isn’t too full too early — give you a chance to leave a message to get a callback when an agent is available.

We tested this number, along with some other state agencies, and found the callback feature to be pretty successful.

If you want to see someone in person, that’s also possible. You can see the available dates and locations here.
