Q. How long will I have to wait for my state tax refund?
— Impatient

A. We’ve had a lot of folks ask this question.

We asked the Treasury Department if something was amiss. It didn’t respond to that, but it said the Division of Taxation has issued nearly 1.9 million refunds totaling more than $2 billion to date, with an average refund of $1,027.

Returns typically take four weeks when filed electronically, but may take as long as 16 weeks for paper returns sent by certified mail, it said.

Taxpayers can check the status of their refund online.

There are reasons why your return could be delayed, such as if you claim the Earned Income Tax Credit — those returns get a little extra scrutiny to prevent fraud.
