Photo: pixabay.comQ. How can I decide if I should hire an accountant? I’m married with two kids. My wife has some 1099 income and I have W-2 income. I usually just do it myself, but I’m honestly tired of it but I don’t want to waste money.

A. It’s a very timely question.
Like many questions when it is related to finances, it depends.
If your finances are simple, such as only having W-2 income, you may need an accountant, said Joseph Sarnecki, a certified financial planner with U.S. Financial Services in Fairfield.
He said based on the information you provided, given that you have multiple sources of income including 1099 income, your situation might be more complex than most.
“It’s been noted that people who do their own taxes miss out on certain deductions and credits because they’re unaware that they exist, especially those who itemize their deductions,” Sarnecki said. “Hiring an accountant in addition to saving you time, may help you avoid costly mistakes, and even reduce your tax bill. It’s an investment, but it might pay off in the long run.”
He said if you’re going to do something yourself rather than hiring a professional, you should have the time, desire and knowledge to do it yourself.
“It appears you have the time and knowledge but have lost the desire,” he said. “Contrary to the song, it may be in this case, two out of three is bad.”
