We got married. Do we get one or two ANCHOR benefits?

Q. I rented an apartment in 2021. My name is on the lease and my wife’s name is on the lease. But in that year, the current ANCHOR benefit year, we got married. Are we both eligible for separate benefits as renters?
— Homeowner, now

A. Good question.

Unfortunately, no.

We double-checked with the Treasury Department, and your marriage during that year changed your status.

“For this season, they are eligible for one benefit because they were married in 2021, and both names are on the lease,” said spokeswoman Danielle Currie. “They are not considered `multiple renters.’”
