Can I get Senior Freeze if I pay taxes through mortgage escrow?

Q. In looking up whether I was qualified for the Senior Freeze, I saw one eligibility requirement that says your taxes must be paid by June 1. Does this mean people paying a current mortgage, where the company pays the taxes quarterly are ineligible? My taxes are paid quarterly by that company and my taxes are not paid in full by June 1 of any year. Am I and millions of other New Jersey seniors still paying a mortgage disqualified?

A. We took your question to the Treasury Department.

“The June 1st deadline is for the next calendar year after the original property taxes were due,” spokeswoman Danielle Currie said. “So, as an example: all 2023 property taxes must be paid in full by June 1, 2024.”

She also addressed people who pay their property taxes through their mortgage.

“People who pay their property taxes through their mortgage escrow, as long as the taxes are timely paid and in full by June 1, are entitled to apply,” she said.
