Q. How do I get copies of my old tax returns and old returns from my ex-husband?
— Stumped

A. First, you can’t get copies of tax returns that you didn’t file.

If you’re looking for tax returns that your ex filed alone, you’re out of luck unless it’s needed as part of a divorce proceeding. If that’s the case, you should speak to an attorney to see your options.

If you’re looking for your own returns, you can get it from the IRS.

Complete Form 4506 and send it to the IRS address listed on the form.

There’s a $43 fee for each copy and these are available for the current tax year and up to seven years prior.

You can also get a tax transcript from the IRS.

“These are free and available for the most current tax year after the IRS has processed the return,” the IRS said, noting that basically means the last three years are available. “To protect taxpayers’ identities, this document partially hides personally identifiable information such as names, addresses and Social Security numbers.”

You can use the IRS’ Get Transcript Online tool to view, print or download a copy.

You can also request it by phone at (800) 908-9946.

Mail, too, is an option.

The IRS said taxpayers can complete and send either Form 4506-T or Form 4506-T-EZ to the IRS
