Is Lowe’s responsible for water damage?

A Whippany homeowner purchased a Whirlpool water softener at Lowe’s, paying for installation and an extended warranty. But in less than a year, a connector installed by Lowe’s started leaking, and water spread from the unfinished part of her basement to the finished part. When the homeowner called Lowe’s for help, the company didn’t, and later denied responsibility for the mess.
