One Livingston man’s home improvement job could not have gone worse. He paid nearly $58,000 to a contractor – who was properly registered with the state and fully insured – to extend a family room and add a full bathroom. But the contractor didn’t finish the job and racked up $150,000 in fines with the town for working without permits after his check to the town bounced. It would cost $34,000 to clean up the mess with a new contractor.
