If you’re worried about falling victim to Medicare fraud, worry no longer. There’s a group of knowledgeable volunteers who will help for free: Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP).

The SMP program, recently featured in the Bamboozled column on NJ.com, is federally funded and available in every state. As long as you provide the needed documents, they can help you analyze your bills and make sure they’re accurate.

SMP’s project director Charles Clarkson says there are a few common scams to look out for. For example, be wary of people promising free medical alert systems. Additionally, watch out for phone calls stating that new Medicare cards are being issued, and beware of post cards offering back or knee support systems covered by Medicare.
