The IRS said scammers accessed more taxpayer information via the agency’s Get Transcript tool, which allows taxpayers to order their tax transcripts online. This is important because with a tax transcript, a scammer has all the information he needs to file a fake tax return in your name with the goal of getting a fake refund.
While the IRS is offering credit monitoring to affected taxpayers, it’s also recommending they gain a special PIN through the IRS web site for future transactions.
The problem? The system that assigns the PIN uses the same technology crooks broke past on the Get Transcript site, according to NJ.com’s Bamboozled column.
