Consumer advocates say you should always be wary when a contractor solicits work by knocking on your door.

It’s a popular way for scammers to get your money.

But the Bamboozled column reports that unsolicited door-knocking is a common method contractors — approved by the Board of Public Utilities — who solicit business for energy efficient upgrades. Many such upgrades have government-sponsored financial incentives that can save homeowners on the jobs, and long-term, on energy bills.

Homeowners should still be cautious, and ask for identification and paperwork so such companies and programs can be confirmed independently.
