Not sure if you filed a tax return?

Q. I don’t remember if I filed taxes last year and the year before for federal and state. How can I check?
— Taxpayer, maybe

A. We’re a little concerned that you’re not sure about your recent tax filings and why you don’t remember.

Consider having a professional help in the future so you can be sure your tax returns are filed, especially if your lack of certainty is because of a possible “senior moment.” Or, if you’re married and you’re worried that your spouse isn’t filing on your behalf, you may have bigger problems.

You can find out if you filed a tax return with the IRS for your federal taxes by obtaining a transcript for the years that you are unsure of, said Gail Rosen, a Martinsville-based certified public accountant.

To obtain your transcript online or by mail, go to the IRS website or call the IRS Transcript Order Line at (800) 908-9946.

Rosen said for the state, you can go to Taxation’s website to obtain copies of previously filed tax returns. You can also try calling the customer service center at (609) 292-6400.
