Q. Is there any fee or a discount for a 75-year-old to get a REAL ID?

A. The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 at the recommendation of the 9/11 Commission.

It sets “standards for the issuance of sources of identification,” according to the Department of Homeland Security. https://www.dhs.gov/real-id/real-id-faqs

It said the law “established minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes driver’s licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Act’s minimum standards.”

If you want to fly and use your driver’s license as identification, New Jerseyans won’t have to get a REAL ID until May 3, 2023, according to the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).

To get a REAL ID, you need to provide your Social Security number and other documents that add up to six points based on MVC’s guidelines. You can use MVC’s document selector tool to see what you need to bring.

Now to your question. Unfortunately, there are no discounts for seniors. A standard license costs $24 while the REAL ID costs $35.

You can make an appointment on the MVC website.
