Q. When my husband and I filed our taxes for last year, our child was 16 years old. The child turned 17 after we filed our taxes. Will we still get the $500 stimulus payment?
— Parent

A. It’s going to be based on the information the IRS has.

If you took a deduction for your child on your 2019 return, you will be eligible for the additional $500 per child stimulus payment.

Based on current IRS guidance, you wouldn’t have to return the payment

And if you were supposed to get a payment for a child and didn’t, you still have a shot with your 2020 tax return.

“When you file next year, you can claim additional credits on your 2020 tax return if you are able to eligible for them, for example if your child is born in 2020,” the IRS website says. “But, you won’t be required to repay any payment when filing your 2020 tax return even if your qualifying child turns 17 in 2020 or your adjusted gross income increases in 2020 above the thresholds listed above.”

Same goes for your spouse. If you filed a joint tax return with your spouse, and then the spouse has died, you will get the full stimulus for a married couple and you will not have to return that money.
