Q. I lived in Ringwood until January of 2017 and now I have moved one town over to Wanaque. I applied for the 2016 Homestead Rebate. How will I get the refund?
— Still in N.J.

A. Congrats on your move.

The due date for filing for your 2016 Homestead Rebate was Nov. 30, 2018.

Benefits typically are paid through the reduction of your property tax.

But if you moved or planned to close on the sale prior to Nov. 30, 2018, then you can ask for a rebate check or direct deposit into your bank account, said Howard Hook, a certified financial planner and certified public accountant with EKS Associates in Princeton.

“Rebate applications for 2016 were not mailed until September 2018, so in your case, since you moved prior to that date, you should have indicated that you no longer owned the home you were claiming a 2016 rebate for and requested a rebate check or direct deposit, Hook said.

You can check the status of your Homestead Rebate online or you can call (888) 238-1233.
