Q. What is the best tax preparation software? I would like to run some numbers on my own.

A. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, there are lots of tax software programs that can help you file your taxes without a professional, or like you’re hoping to do, run projections based on different scenarios.

But we can’t say any one program is “the best.”

“There are many top providers of tax preparation out there that all do a fine job with what seems to be your needs,” said Jody D’Agostini, a certified financial planner with AXA Advisors/The Falcon Financial Group in Morristown. “They all provide a snapshot of your tax liability.”

D’Agostini said you might look for specific areas where the programs might lend assistance.

For example, she suggests you look for software that allows you access to databases for tax information should you need to investigate particular situations that you might have.

“Others allow you to speak with a person should you have a question that you are unable to resolve,” she said. “It is always best to investigate early, as these professionals may be overwhelmed closer to the tax filing deadline.”
