A ‘Sugar Daddy’/fake check scam

A woman thought she found answers to her money problems on a website that would set her up with a “sugar daddy”: an older man who would pay off her student loans and give her financial security in return for companionship.

She was in contact with a man who said his name was “Steven.” He gave her a set of instructions so that he could put money into her account. However, it actually led to her giving him private information that allowed him to scam her out of nearly $5,000 using fake checks. After she reported for fraud, the bank said that it couldn’t help her because she shared her account information. It was a victim-assisted crime.
